Ukraine is not insisting on its immediate accession to NATO during the war. This is due to the fact that some countries fear being drawn into the conflict.

This was stated by Minister of Foreign Affairs Andriy Sybiga during a conversation with journalists on the sidelines of the NATO ministerial meeting on Wednesday, December 4.

Ukraine's accession to NATO

As Sybiga noted, there is currently no dialogue on the format of Ukraine's membership in NATO. According to him, the appropriate time should come for this. Sybiga also added that an agreement on the format of Ukraine's membership in NATO during the war does not seem realistic.

"We are a country that is being attacked by Russia, and it is really difficult to talk about the possibility of a country's membership in NATO when military operations are being conducted on our territory — this is the position of individual NATO members who believe that this could lead to their direct involvement in the war. And Ukraine does not strive to this," the minister said.

At the same time, Sybiga emphasized that Kyiv's position on Ukraine's accession to NATO remains fundamentally unchanged. According to him, Ukraine considers NATO membership the only possible security guarantee for itself.

"We are talking about our membership in NATO. The strategic goal is accession to NATO," he said.

It should be reminded, that the number of countries in Europe that oppose Ukraine's membership in NATO is increasing. Luxembourg made a corresponding statement.

Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis said that in order to ensure peace in Ukraine, NATO countries must provide security guarantees. In his opinion, the war will be decided on the battlefield.
