Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico said that during his visit to Moscow last month, he had agreed with Vladimir Putin on gas supplies to the country. This statement was made against the backdrop of the termination of Russian gas transit through Ukraine in early 2025.

Robert Fico said this in a video message posted on Facebook.

Fico agrees with Putin on gas supplies to Slovakia

"My visits to Moscow and Brussels were not about choosing between East and West but ensuring heat for our homes and securing €500 million in transit revenues. My priority was to guarantee a minimum supply of gas for Slovakia's domestic needs—and we achieved that," Fico said in a video message on Facebook.

However, the prime minister did not provide details of the agreements, and the government has not yet commented on the situation.

In addition, Robert Fico accused Ukraine of stopping transit, which, according to him, caused significant damage to Slovakia. He also threatened to cut electricity supplies to Ukraine and reduce support for Ukrainian refugees.

How Slovakia will supply Russian gas to the country

Despite the termination of gas transit through Ukraine, supplies to Slovakia will continue through Hungary, which receives Russian gas through the Turkish Stream pipeline. According to Fico, this decision saved the country from an energy crisis.

Fico also noted that the suspension of gas transit from Ukraine has cost the European Union €500 million in lost transit fees and another €1 billion in higher gas prices. The Slovak prime minister said he would meet with European Commission officials in Brussels on January 8 to discuss the situation.

As a reminder, Robert Fico threatened to cut electricity supplies to Ukraine after the gas transit was stopped. In turn, the Slovakian energy operator said that Ukraine will continue to receive electricity, and that Fico's statements are politicized and grossly violate the law.

Slovakia has also recently held rallies against Robert Fico' s pro-Russian policies.
