President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy wants to call President of the United States Joe Biden. The topic of the conversation will be an invitation to join NATO.

The Ukrainian leader said this following a meeting with German chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz on Monday, December 9, Ukrinform reports.

Zelenskyy will talk to Biden

"As for, for example, the invitation to NATO, it is still difficult to talk with President Trump about this, as he is not yet in the White House and does not have all the legal powers. I plan, by the way, to call President Biden in the near future, if he has the opportunity to speak with me, and raise the issue of the NATO invitation, because he is currently the acting President of the United States, and much depends on his position," Zelenskyy emphasized.

According to him, there is no point in discussing with Trump what does not depend on him while he is not in the White House today.

Zelenskyy also thanked the United States for its assistance. He noted that this is a serious support that is important for Ukraine.

"And we talked about the fact that even if there is a pause while Ukraine is not in NATO, even if we had an invitation but were not yet in NATO, and such a pause occurs, what will happen during that time? Who will guarantee us any security? And I will tell you frankly, we can consider and work on Emmanuel's proposal. Remember, he suggested that some forces from one country or another could be present in certain areas of Ukraine to guarantee our security while Ukraine is not in NATO. But we need a clear understanding of when Ukraine will be in the EU and when it will be in NATO," he added.

As a reminder, on December 7, the Biden administration announced a new aid package for Ukraine worth $988 million.

Also on December 7, Trump and Zelenskyy met in Paris. The meeting was initiated by French President Emmanuel Macron, who convinced Trump, who was initially hesitant.
