Zelenskyy sanctions part of the Georgian government
Ukraine has approved sanctions against a part of the Georgian government that cooperates with the Kremlin's policies. In particular, sanctions against the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Bidzina Ivanishvili, and his accomplices.
This was announced by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday, December 5.
Ukraine imposes sanctions on authorities in Georgia
Zelenskyy signed a decree giving effect to the National Security and Defense Council's decision on sanctions to be imposed on the government of Georgia. The head of state said that this part of the government was surrendering Georgia to the Kremlin leader.
In particular, Ukraine imposed sanctions on Ivanishvili and his 19 accomplices, those who, according to Zelenskyy, are selling Georgia's interests and people.
"This is exactly what the protests in Georgia have been directed against. It is important that our partners also speak about their position now, honestly declare what is happening. And we need to act," the President emphasized.
He added that the main thing in international affairs is a timely and principled response. The Head of State called on the leaders of the world to unite and defend themselves against Moscow.
"This is what happens in international affairs: if you do not respond in time or if you do not respond in principle, then decades are lost and countries are deprived of freedom," Zelensky wrote.
As a reminder, since November 28, citizens have been protesting in Georgia over the government's decision to suspend the European integration process. Each time, the security forces use special means to brutally disperse the demonstrators and carry out mass arrests.
Earlier, we wrote that the United States suspended its strategic partnership with Georgia and called on the government to return to democratic reforms.
We also reported that Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili said she did not plan to leave office despite the end of her mandate. She argued that the parliament lacks legitimacy.
