In Romania, the Constitutional Court annulled the first round of the presidential election. Thus, the entire electoral process will resume in full.

This was reported by Digi24 on Friday, December 6.

Cancellation of the first round of elections in Romania

The Constitutional Court unanimously ruled:

  • To annul the entire electoral process for the presidential elections of Romania conducted on the basis of the government decree;
  • The electoral process will be fully reinstated, with the government setting a new date for the presidential elections of Romania, as well as a revised calendar schedule to carry out the necessary actions for the elections to be held in 2024.

This decision is final and binding.

The judges of the Constitutional Court ruled the decision after an urgent consultation, as they received many new requests to cancel the presidential election. They were based on declassified documents from the Supreme Defense Council, according to which the campaign of pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu was the result of foreign manipulation.

To recap, Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu promises to stop exporting grain from Ukraine via Romania if he wins.

Earlier, the head of the Social Democratic Party of Romania and Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu resigned as the party leader after failing to qualify for the second round of the presidential election.
