Poland responds to Russian threats over new NATO base
The spokeswoman of Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova claimed that the American anti-missile base in Polish Redzikowo is one of the possible targets for Russia. According to her, the deployment of the base is a "provocative step" that contributes to "increasing strategic risk" and "nuclear threat". Poland responded that the object is purely defensive in nature.
This was reported by RMF24, citing a statement by the spokesman for the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Paweł Wroński, on Thursday, November 21.
Moscow announced a threat from NATO
The spokeswoman of Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova called the deployment of the base in Poland part of "the destructive practice of bringing NATO's military infrastructure closer to Russian borders". She accused the US of aiming to "project its power" beyond its own territory in order to put pressure on Russia and other nuclear states.
Zakharova said that this leads to "an increase in strategic risk" and, as a result, "an increase in the overall level of the nuclear threat". Zakharova added that "if necessary," a strike on the base could be carried out using the latest weapons.
Poland's response to Russian threats
In turn, the spokesman of Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Paweł Wroński emphasized that the facility in Redzikowo is exclusively defensive in nature and is designed to combat ballistic missiles.
"It is designed to combat ballistic missiles, especially from those countries that are rogue states. These are countries that build their policy on the fact that they constantly threaten someone, declare that they are going to attack someone and believe that such political robbery is their way of conducting politics," he emphasized.
Wroński also added that Russian threats are long-term, and their renewal may force NATO to strengthen air defenses on the entire eastern flank of the Alliance.
Poland is ready to strengthen defense
Speaking about the possible expansion of the base, Wroński emphasized that there is a consensus in Poland on the need to strengthen the defense of NATO's eastern flank as much as possible. This idea is supported by both citizens and political forces.
Previously, Polish Minister of Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz also emphasized the importance of modernizing the base in Redzikowo, emphasizing that this is necessary to counter real threats.
It should be recalled that the United States officially opened a missile defense base in the Polish city of Redzikowo near the Baltic Sea coast. It has been under construction since the 2000s and is aimed at protecting NATO countries.
Novyny.LIVE also wrote that President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a telephone conversation with Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk, who reported that Poland is preparing the 45th defense support package for Ukraine and has already begun work on the next one.
