Denmark responded to whether the U.S. could buy Greenland
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said that Greenland may become independent, but will not become part of the United States. Increased US concern about security in the Arctic is justified against the backdrop of growing activity of Russia and China in the region.
This is reported by Reuters.
Greenland scandal — what they say in Denmark
Rasmussen said that Greenland could become independent if its residents so choose, but it is unlikely to become a US state.
"We are fully aware that Greenland has its own ambitions. If they are realized, Greenland will become independent, although it is unlikely that it has ambitions to become a federal state within the United States," said the Danish Foreign Minister.
Speaking to reporters, he added that the growing US concern about security in the Arctic is "quite justified" and is related to the activities of Russia and China in the region.
"I don't think we are going through a foreign policy crisis. We are open to a dialogue with the Americans on how we can work even more closely than we do now to ensure that American ambitions are realized," he added.
It should be noted that Greenland is an autonomous constituent country within the Kingdom of Denmark and the largest island on the planet, located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans.
