Flights are being canceled across Europe due to heavy snow and freezing rain. The situation is particularly difficult in the UK and Germany, where several major airports have suspended flights.

This was reported by AP on Monday, January 6.

Heavy snow in Britain

On Sunday, severe weather conditions — heavy snow and freezing rain — halted air travel in a number of European countries.

In the United Kingdom in particular, the weather continues to be unfavorable, leading to fears that many rural communities in the north could be cut off. It is known that up to 40 centimeters of snow have fallen at altitudes above 300 meters.

Meanwhile, the national grid, which controls the country's power system, is working to restore power. Blackouts have been reported in the cities of Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff and Wales.

Many sporting events were postponed, and Liverpool and Manchester airports closed their runways overnight, but returned to normal operations yesterday.

The road network was also affected by the weather - many roads were closed in advance by local authorities, but stuck cars and accidents caused disruptions elsewhere. The national railroad canceled a number of trains and warned of disruptions throughout the week.

According to the Met Office, wet snow will move north and be heaviest in northern England and southern Scotland, followed by warming in the south. There will be a threat of flooding on the rivers Taw and Avon.

Heavy snow in Germany

In Germany, authorities warned of icy conditions and advised people to stay home if possible. Frankfurt airport canceled 120 of 1,090 scheduled flights on Sunday, and only one runway was open in Munich.

Also in Baden-Württemberg, a bus ran off the road near the town of Hemmingen due to severe weather conditions. Eight people were injured. Long-distance trains were also disrupted.

As a reminder, the flight from Hong Kong went back in time, taking off on January 1 and landing in Los Angeles on December 31.

Also at the end of December 2025, a Russian missile hit an Azerbaijani plane in the skies over Grozny. It was not allowed to make an emergency landing, so the plane was forced to fly to Aktau airport in Kazakhstan, where it crashed.
