Why Russia attacked Ukraine on December 13
Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia used cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. According to preliminary estimates, a total of 93 missiles were launched. Among them was at least one North Korean missile.
How many missiles were shot down and what role did the F-16 play in this?
"According to preliminary reports, there were 93 missiles. In particular, there was at least one North Korean missile. We managed to shoot down 81 missiles, including 11 cruise missiles shot down by our F-16s. The Russians also used almost 200 drones in this attack. This is one of the largest strikes on our energy sector," Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
Zelenskyy's reaction to the missile strike
The President of Ukraine said that the attack demonstrated Vladimir Putin's real intentions, including his unwillingness to negotiate. He added that the Russian dictator has no restrictions on the use of long-range weapons and the purchase of necessary components for them. The President called on the partners to respond to the terror of Ukraine with concrete actions and thanked everyone who continues to support the country in its resistance to the war.
"This is Putin’s version of a "peaceful plan" — to destroy everything. This is how he seeks "negotiations" — by terrorizing millions of people. He faces no limitations in range or in acquiring the necessary components for missile production. Oil provides Putin with enough money to believe in impunity. A strong global response is needed: a massive reaction to a massive strike. Only this can stop terror. If leaders fear reacting or grow accustomed to terror, Putin sees it as permission to continue. We need Patriots to shoot down these missiles and prove that terror won’t achieve its goals. We must strengthen sanctions against Russia for the war to truly impact its missile production," Zelenskyy wrote.
As a reminder, the United States recently approved a contract for the maintenance of F-16 aircraft in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Ukrenergo has been forced to impose additional restrictions on electricity supply to Ukrainians.
