On Tuesday, January 7, Icelandic Foreign Minister Katrín Gunnarsdóttir arrived in Ukraine on her first official visit. In fact, it was her first visit to Kyiv since her appointment to the post. And this fact eloquently testifies to Iceland's high support for Ukraine.

Novyny.LIVE summarized the results of Gunnarsdóttir's meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

Foreign Minister of Iceland visited Ukraine: summary

At the final press briefing following the bilateral talks, Sybiha emphasized that the signing of the security agreement between Iceland and Ukraine last year, as well as President Zelenskyy's visit to Reykjavik, opened a new page in the relationship between Ukraine and Iceland. In general, this country will recall political, financial and security support for Ukraine since the first days of the Russian invasion.

As it has become known, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Iceland discussed the following tracks of cooperation between our countries:

  • Support for President Zelensky's Peace Formula and a comprehensive and just peace for Ukraine.
  • Continued economic and political isolation of Russia and increasing the cost of war for it.
  • Support for Ukraine's path to NATO and the EU.
  • Iceland will continue assisting Ukraine with demining, logistics, and training Ukrainian military personnel, including medics, as well as supporting initiatives for expedited procurement of weapons from Ukrainian manufacturers. Iceland has already contributed investments in Ukraine's defense industry based on the Danish model.
  • In 2025, the project for prosthetics for wounded Ukrainian soldiers will be scaled up.
  • Iceland will participate in the coalition for demining Ukraine.
  • Energy assistance, generators, and other equipment from Iceland, which helped Ukraine survive last year, will support the country through 2025.
  • Iceland will share its expertise in renewable energy with Ukraine.

Aid to Ukraine does not depend on the size of the country

In total, Denmark has provided $30 million in assistance for Ukraine's defense needs. And this is a fairly significant amount, proportional to Iceland's capabilities.

"We are grateful for this. Assistance does not depend on the size of the country, but on political will and determination. Now we are united with Iceland by the values of freedom and democracy, the rule of law and justice, security and development in Europe. Today, we also discussed in detail how we can further increase production by placing orders with Ukrainian producers, emphasized Ukrainian Foreign Minister.

Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, in turn, assured that Iceland would continue to finance and invest in the Ukrainian defense industry based on the Danish model.

As a reminder, during the visit of Icelandic Foreign Minister Katrín Gunnarsdóttir to Ukraine, it became known about the level of Icelandic assistance to official Kyiv.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha reacted to the possible postponement of the visit to Ukraine by Special Representative for Ukraine Keith Kellogg.
