Russian language is still heard in Ukraine — reason
The former head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance Anton Drobovych said that about 30% of Ukrainians remain unwilling to completely abandon the Russian language and culture, even during the ongoing war with Russia.
Drobovych said this during an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
Ukrainians' attitude to the language
According to Drobovych, this group of citizens continues to perceive the Russian language and cultural heritage as part of their own identity or daily comfort.
This is partly due to the historical past, long-term Russification and the influence of Russian culture on mass consciousness.
In comparison, the number of those who gradually refuse to consume Russian content and switch to the Ukrainian language is growing.
As is known, during full-scale Russian aggression, Ukraine has intensified the processes of decolonization and de-russification. A significant part of Ukrainians consciously abandons the Russian language, cultural products and even daily habits associated with Russia. However, there remains a part of the population that is still hesitant or not ready to take this step.
Drobovych emphasized that the process of transition to the Ukrainian language and cultural identification requires not only time, but also state support and educational work.
It should be reminded, that Ukrainian singer Volodymyr Dantes openly condemned parents who still raise children using Russian language. He was criticized for this by Ukrainian blogger Ksyusha Maneken, who has an award from the Main Intelligence Directorate.
In addition, the other day the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine excluded Belarusian and Russian from the list of languages to which the regime of support and special protection will apply in accordance with the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
