US officially confirms Ukraine's permission to strike at Russia
U.S. President Joe Biden has officially authorized Ukraine to strike at Russian territory using long-range weapons. Such actions may force Russia to enter into peace talks.
This was reported by US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian Nichols in a commentary for O Globo.
US confirms Ukraine's authorization for strikes on Russian territory
Nichols officially confirmed the information that Biden had authorized Ukraine to use long-range weapons in Russia.
"We must remember that the war began with Russia's new unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. The conflict in Ukraine can end right now if Russia withdraws its troops from Ukraine and respects Ukraine's borders. This has always been the case," said the US Assistant Secretary of State.
He emphasized that the weapons that the United States allowed Ukraine to use would provide more opportunities for self-defense and would have an impact on Russia.
"With any luck, it will allow the Russian Federation to realise that the use of force to seize Ukrainian territory will not succeed, and perhaps they will begin to negotiate peace or, better still, simply withdraw from Ukrainian territory. It is up to them to decide whether this conflict will continue or not," Nichols emphasized.
To recap, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has officially approved a new nuclear doctrine. The document provides for a nuclear strike against a country that threatens Russia.
The Kremlin leader's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, reacted negatively to the US authorization for Ukraine to strike at Russian territory. He claimed that such a decision would provoke further tensions around the conflict.
