American voters supported Donald Trump in the presidential election. However, he will not take office until January 20, 2025, and there are still many events that will take place before the inauguration.

This was reported by CNN.

Key dates

Trump will not take office until January 20, 2025. In November, December, and January, the transition of power will take place:

  • December 11 — Deadline for states to issue certificates confirming results
  • December 17 — Electoral College members vote in their respective states
  • January 3 — New Congress is sworn in
  • January 6 — Congress counts the Electoral College votes
  • January 20 — Inauguration Day

Trump is still awaiting a verdict

Before he became president-elect, a New York jury found Trump guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to the payment of money to an adult film star before the 2016 election. The verdict in this case is scheduled for November 26.

But Judge Juan Merchant may decide to overturn the verdict as early as November 12 due to the Supreme Court's decision on presidential immunity. The conviction could theoretically lead to imprisonment, but the president-elect will not be thrown in jail. The judge could also give Trump probation or fine him.

There are other court cases that could be affected by Trump's election as president. He also faces federal prosecution for attempting to cancel the 2020 election, and mishandling classified data, although it is likely that these cases will be somehow withdrawn or dismissed.

As a reminder, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump won 270 electoral votes and won the US presidential election for the second time.

The Republican Party also won a majority in the U.S. Senate for the first time in four years — 51 seats out of 100.
