Chinese President Xi Jinping said in his New Year's address that no one can stop China's reunification with Taiwan. He also warned those whom he considers to be the forces that advocate Taiwan's independence both on the island and abroad.

This was reported by Reuters.

What Xi Jinping said about Taiwan

"People on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family. No one can break our family ties, and no one can stop the historical trend of national reunification," he said.

In his New Year's speech a year earlier, Xi Jinping said that China's "reunification" with Taiwan was inevitable and that people on both sides "should be bound by a common sense of purpose and share the glory of the revival of the Chinese nation".

Tensions in the Taiwan Strait remained high throughout 2024, especially after Lai Lindy became president of the island in May, which China calls a "separatist".

It is noted that over the past year, Beijing has stepped up military pressure near Taiwan, sending warships and aircraft into the waters and airspace around the island almost daily.

Reuters added that China considers democratically governed Taiwan to be its territory. However, the Taiwanese government rejects this and says that only its people can decide their future, and China must respect the choice of the Taiwanese people.

On the eve of the New Year, Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin exchanged wishes and reaffirmed their strategic partnership. The joint statement said that the countries had reached a new level of political trust and strategic coordination.
