With this decision, Steinmeier fulfilled Chancellor Olaf Scholz's request to dissolve the parliament after a vote of no confidence was passed against him. The election of a new government will take place on February 23, 2025 — this date was agreed upon in advance by the leaders of the SPD and CDU/CSU parties.

The article states that according to the law, the federal president can dissolve the Bundestag within 21 days at the suggestion of the Federal Chancellor if it loses the vote of confidence. New elections must be held within 60 days.

It is known that before making the decision, Steinmeier first held talks with the leaders of parliamentary factions, during which he could not recognize any new majority.

"Therefore, I am convinced that new elections are the right way forward for the benefit of our country," he added.

On December 16, the Bundestag passed a vote of no confidence in the government of Olaf Scholz. The majority of MPs voted in favor of this decision.

Subsequently, Steinmeier called on citizens to remain calm about the early elections.
