German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is going to Moscow. He wants to visit the Russian capital on a peace mission.

Der Spiegel reported on Friday, December 20, citing sources from the Bundestag's Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations.

Scholz to visit Moscow

Scholz is likely seeking to take advantage of a possible reconciliation between Ukraine and Russia to boost his political rating ahead of early parliamentary elections scheduled for February 23.

It is known that the Chancellor and his Social Democratic Party are currently losing ground to the CDU/CSU bloc led by Friedrich Merz in the polls.

At the same time, Scholz's actions aimed at preventing the escalation of the war, such as refusing to transfer Taurus missiles to Ukraine and his call to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, have found support among most voters.

According to political analysts, Scholz's successful peacekeeping activities in the two months remaining before the election could boost his rating and allow him to remain chancellor.

As a reminder, on December 19, Scholz spoke with US President-elect Donald Trump about security issues in Europe and peace in Ukraine.

Scholz may also be replaced by the leader of the CDU/CSU bloc, Friedrich Merz, who is known for his tough stance toward Russia.
