Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is increasingly announcing his intention to resign, although he has not yet made a final decision. He may leave the post of leader of the ruling Liberal Party of Canada after nine years in office.

This was reported by Reuters.

Why Trudeau is thinking about resigning

A source in Trudeau's inner circle said that he will resign as leader of the ruling Liberal Party in the coming days. This will hit his party very hard, because it is not in a winning position now, and parliamentary elections are expected in October.

Analysts believe that if Trudeau resigns, it will likely spur new calls for quick elections to create a stable government capable of dealing with President-elect Donald Trump's administration over the next four years.

Why Trudeau is in trouble

Calls from rivals and the opposition for Trudeau to resign have intensified since December, when Trudeau tried to demote Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, one of his closest cabinet allies, after she refused his proposals for increased spending.

Instead, Freeland resigned and wrote a letter accusing Trudeau of "political stunts" rather than focusing on what was best for the country.

Trudeau brought the Liberals to power in 2015, promising a "sunny way" and a progressive agenda that promoted women's rights and pledged to fight climate change. But the day-to-day realities of governing gradually wore him down, and like many Western leaders, the need to deal with the aftermath of the pandemic took up much of his time.

Despite the fact that Ottawa has spent heavily to protect consumers and businesses, accumulating a record budget deficit, this has done little to protect against public anger when prices have risen sharply. Unsuccessful immigration policies have led to hundreds of thousands of newcomers, straining an already overheated housing market, experts say.

As a reminder, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump made a cruel joke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He suggested that Canada become the 51st state of the United States.

The Canadian Minister of Defense has also recently answered the question of where the NASAMS air defense systems for Ukraine, which were financed by the country, are now.
