Ukraine's accession to the EU — Juncker suggests possible format
Ukraine may join the European Union in the format of "partial membership". This is due to the fact that a lot of transformations are still needed before full accession — from corruption to the rule of law.
This was announced by former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in a commentary for dpa.
Ukraine's accession to the EU
The former president of the European Commission put forward the idea of Ukraine's "partial membership" in the European Union. He argued that the country would have to undergo many more transformations to fully join the EU.
This format implies that Ukraine will participate in some internal processes in the European Union and meetings, but will not have voting rights.
"Ukraine will not be able to join the EU very quickly... There are still many unresolved issues in Ukraine, from corruption to the rule of law, that need to be addressed before we can seriously talk about Ukraine's accession," Juncker said.
According to him, for Ukraine, "partial membership" in the EU would be a signal of recognition by European partners of its European integration work.
As a reminder, EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova believes that Ukraine's accession to the EU will not happen in the near future.
Earlier, we wrote that the European Union has for the first time approved funding for five projects for joint defense procurement among member states, including ammunition. Some of them will be sent to Ukraine.
