On Wednesday, January 15, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, delivered his farewell address to the nation as the Head of State. He summed up the results of his 4 years in office and made a number of statements, including the growing oligarchy in the country, the opportunities, and dangers of Artificial Intelligence, the need to make a very important amendment to the US Constitution, and a number of other points.

It was reported by Novyny.LIVE with reference to the broadcast of the White House and CNN.

What Biden said in his farewell address

Rising oligarchy. Biden warned that an oligarchy is emerging in the United States, alluding to the new administration of President-elect Donald Trump, which includes billionaires. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the same expectations for the super-rich as for workers and middle-class people.

"I want to warn the country about some things that cause me great concern. And this is a dangerous concern. And this is a dangerous concentration of power in the hands of a very few super-rich people. Today, an oligarchy of extraordinary wealth, power, and influence is emerging in America that literally threatens our entire democracy, our fundamental rights and freedoms, and everyone’s equal chance of success," he said.

Technological industrial complex. The President of the United States pointed to social media when discussing his concerns. In particular, he spoke about disinformation, false information, and the fact that social media refuse to verify facts. Biden called on the platforms to be held accountable.

"Americans are under an avalanche of disinformation and false information that allows for the abuse of power. The free press is collapsing, editors are disappearing. Social networks refuse to check facts. The truth is being overshadowed by lies told for the sake of power and profit. We must hold social platforms to account to protect our children, our families, and our democracy itself from the abuse of power," he said.

The dangers of AI. Biden warned of the "great opportunities and risks" that Artificial Intelligence brings with it.

"Artificial Intelligence is the most significant technology of our time, perhaps of all time. Nothing offers more profound opportunities and risks for our economy and our security, our society, for humanity. Artificial intelligence even has the potential to help us answer my call to end cancer as we know it. But if security measures are not taken, AI could pose new threats to our rights, our way of life, our privacy, the way we work, and the way we defend our country," he said.

He also emphasized that AI should work for the good and that the United States, not China, should lead the world in the development of Artificial Intelligence as a country of freedom.

Amendment of the US Constitution. The President of the United States has called for amendments to the Constitution so that Presidents cannot avoid responsibility for their actions during the Presidency.

"The power of the President is not unlimited. It is not absolute. And it shouldn’t be," Biden said.

The media reminds us that in the summer, the Supreme Court, considering the case of then candidate for the President of the United States Donald Trump, ruled that Presidents have absolute immunity for actions taken within the scope of their official duties (Trump’s first presidential term was from 2017 to 2021).

Achievements in 4 years of Presidency. Biden said he was proud of the achievements of his administration, noting that Americans would see the results of the decisions made later, in decades.

"It will take time to feel the full impact of what we have done together. But the seed has been planted, and it will grow and bloom for decades," he claimed.

Biden also credited the following achievements:

  • The United States strengthened NATO, and Ukraine remained free;
  • The United States overtook China in the competition;
  • The plan for a ceasefire agreement in Gaza and the release of hostages was developed and agreed upon by his team.

Last words. Biden ended his address on an optimistic note. Having warned of a growing "oligarchy" and made veiled attacks on his successor, the President of the United States concluded his address by calling on Americans to promote his hopeful vision for the country. In addition, he noted that in his 50 years of service to America, he has remained true to its key ideals.

"I love America. You love it too. God bless you. May God protect your truth. Thank you for this great honor," he concluded.

As a reminder, on January 13, Biden delivered a farewell address to the US State Department. At the time, he said that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin had failed to conquer Ukraine, and the United States, in turn, had united 50 countries to counter Russia.

He also said that over the four years of his Presidency, the United States had significantly strengthened the country’s position in the international arena, while the positions of its opponents had weakened.
