Australia reopens its embassy in Ukraine — why is it important?
Australia is reopening its embassy in Ukraine. This step will strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha during a briefing with his Australian counterpart Penny Wong, a correspondent of Novyny.LIVE reports.
Strengthening cooperation
Australian Foreign Minister Wong paid her first visit to Ukraine in a decade. The talks focused on additional Australian support for Ukraine and key international security issues.
The parties agreed to resume the full-fledged work of the Australian Embassy in Ukraine. Sibiga emphasized that this step will strengthen bilateral cooperation and contribute to the deepening of relations between the two countries.
The head of the Ukrainian diplomatic agency also emphasized that support for Kyiv is in Australia's interests, as it helps to strengthen stability not only in Europe but also in the Indo-Pacific region.
"We have to increase pressure on the aggressor state and increase the cost of war for the Kremlin," the minister emphasized.
On the morning of December 18, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong arrived in Kyiv on a visit. Later, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said at a briefing that Australia had provided more than $1 billion in aid to Ukraine. Of these funds, $880 million is military support.
