Zelenskyy compared the dictatorial regimes of Assad and Putin
The regimes of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin are based on violence and repression. There must be punishment for terrible atrocities and human rights violations.
This was stated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy via Telegram on Tuesday, December 10.
Rebels released prisoners in Syria
Zelenskyy expressed his indignation over the terrible human rights violations in Syria and commented on the connection between the regimes of the Kremlin leader and the Syrian president.
The Head of State drew attention to the photographs of Syrian prisons and torture chambers that were opened after Assad fled. According to him, torture, humiliation and other terrible crimes were committed there for years.
"The Assad regime has been based solely on violence for decades. And that's exactly what all the regimes supported by Putin are. We saw the same prisons, torture chambers, unspeakable violence, humiliation, beatings, torture, rape and other crimes on our territory in every settlement that was occupied by the Russian invaders," the President wrote.
He stated that the Russian Federation is a prison state that holds foreign land only thanks to the torture chambers it places there.
Zelenskyy also recalled the numerous human rights violations that began in Crimea in 2014, when Russia began repressions against Crimean Tatars, journalists and political figures.
"Then Russia continued its horrific human rights violations in the occupied Donbas, including the infamous "Izolyatsia" prison. Since February 2022, Russia has extended these practices to all other occupied territories. The atrocities have increased in scale and cruelty," the Ukrainian leader wrote.
He emphasized that it is important to have unity and strength for defeating these regimes, because the violence and humiliation that dictators leave behind has no place in the modern world.
"By helping Ukraine fight against the Russian dictatorship, the international community is helping many other regions of the world restore security and achieve protection from violence," the President of Ukraine emphasized, adding that Putin and Assad deserve to be in prison.
It should be recalled, on December 8, Syrian state television reported the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime. Thousands of citizens began to return to Syria.
We wrote that Russia is actively withdrawing its military contingent from Syria. The process is being carried out with the help of military transport aircraft and ships.
