The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detained the commander of a unit of the Special Operations Forces, who turned out to be a Russian "mole". This was facilitated by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi.

This was reported by the press service of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Friday, November 15.

What is known about the Russian "mole"

The SBU reported that they were able to expose a "deconsecrated" agent of the Russian military intelligence (GRU) with the assistance of Oleksandr Syrskyi. The offender turned out to be a lieutenant colonel, commander of one of the units of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who was recruited by the occupiers before the start of a full-scale war.

"In the spring of 2024, he was remotely "activated" by a Russian GRU officer and assigned a task: to transmit plans for the combat operations of the Defense Forces behind enemy lines to the Russians," the statement said.

Law enforcers learned that the aggressor was most interested in intelligence on sabotage and reconnaissance raids by Ukrainian special forces behind the front line in the Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and Crimean sectors. In order to carry out hostile tasks, the mole used his official position to obtain information about the planned routes of movement of the Defense Forces, their weapons and "targets".

It is noted that the occupiers planned to use this information to eliminate Ukrainian special forces on the front line or beyond it — in the temporarily occupied part of the territory in southern Ukraine.

The agent also "leaked" data on other units of the Defense Forces to his Russian handler.

Detention of a traitor

The SBU military counterintelligence documented everything and the traitor was detained. At the same time, comprehensive measures were taken to secure the locations of the Defense Forces.

According to the investigation, the suspect was recruited by the Russian military intelligence through his acquaintances in Russia he kept in touch with.

During the searches, the SBU seized means of secret communication, computer equipment, a mobile phone and data storage devices.

What punishment awaits the "colonel"

The Russian agent was served a notice of suspicion of high treason committed under martial law. The offender is currently in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of assets.

Recently, the State Bureau of Investigation and the Security Service of Ukraine served MP Yevhen Shevchenko with a notice of suspicion. Law enforcement officers found that he was systematically engaged in information and subversive activities in the interests of Russia.
