Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia is ready to cooperate with the new Donald Trump administration to improve relations, but there is one condition. He said that Washington should take the first step.

This was reported by Reuters.

What Lavrov said

The agency recalled that on December 18, General Keith Kellogg, Trump's special envoy for Russia and Ukraine, said that "both sides are ready for peace talks". Russia did not hesitate to respond and said that it would respond to such signals.

"If the signals coming from the new team in Washington to resume the dialogue that Washington interrupted after the start of the special military operation (war in Ukraine) are serious, of course, we will respond to them," Lavrov told reporters in Moscow.

At the same time, he believes that "it is the Americans who should make the first step", because they "interrupted the dialog".

In addition, the Russian Foreign Minister said that he "sees no point in a weak ceasefire to freeze the war" because "a truce is a road to nowhere".

"We need final legal agreements that will fix all the conditions for ensuring the security of the Russian Federation and, of course, the legitimate security interests of our neighbors," Lavrov said.

As a reminder, Russia has recently started talking again about negotiations on its own terms. Among them were the "demilitarization" of Ukraine and the guarantee of its neutral status.

We also wrote that the head of the Come Back Alive Foundation, Taras Chmut, believes that the war is unlikely to end in 2025, but that active negotiations may begin.
