Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg now believes that peace in Ukraine without territorial losses is unrealistic. As an interim solution, he proposes a temporary transfer of territory to Russia.

Spiegel reported on Monday, December 2.

Territorial losses are inevitable

"If the ceasefire line means that Russia continues to control all the occupied territories, it does not mean that Ukraine has to give up the territory forever," Stoltenberg said.

The former secretary general also added that it is very important that Ukraine receives security guarantees in exchange for a temporary cession of territory. This could be NATO membership, but there are "other ways to arm and support Ukrainians".

Stoltenberg supported the demand of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy not to cede any territories to Russia in the event of a ceasefire, but he considers this unlikely due to the military situation in our country.

"We need a ceasefire line, and, of course, this line should ideally include all the territories currently controlled by Russia. However, we see that this is not entirely realistic in the near future," said the former NATO Secretary General.

Recently, in another interview, Stoltenberg said that only the allies of the alliance would decide whether to invite Ukraine to join the bloc, given the fact that part of the country's territory is occupied.

Stoltenberg also believes that the West should have provided Ukraine with more weapons before the full-scale war began and delivered necessary arms more quickly once the large-scale conflict had started. This, in turn, would have given the Ukrainian Armed Forces a significant advantage.
