On Wednesday, January 1, Ukraine stopped the transit of Russian gas to neighboring countries. In return, Slovakia is preparing to stop supporting refugees from Ukraine.

This was announced by Prime Minister Robert Fico on Facebook on Thursday, January 2.

Supporting refugees in Slovakia

Fico calls the suspension of Russian gas transit to Slovakia "Zelenskiy's sabotage" and says that the country will suffer losses of €500 million a year. The Slovak government will discuss this issue at its next meeting.

According to the prime minister, there are two ways out of the situation: either the resumption of transit or compensation for state losses.

"On behalf of Smer-SD, I announce that we are ready to negotiate and agree in a coalition to stop electricity supplies and to significantly reduce support for Ukrainian citizens staying in the territory of the Slovak Republic," he said.

As a reminder, gas prices in Europe have shown a significant increase, reaching their highest levels since October 2023.

According to Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine has thus "cut off" one of the last levers of Russia's influence on Europe.
