The Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal held a press conference with the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico. He answered whether the country will prolong the transit agreement with Russia after the end of the contract.

Denys Shmyhal reported this via Telegram on Monday, October 7.

Gas transit

"Ukraine will not extend the transit agreement with Russia after its expiration," Shmyhal said.

According to him, the strategic goal of Ukraine is to impose sanctions on the Russian gas molecule, to deprive them of profits from the sale of hydrocarbons, for which the enemy finances the war.

Shmyhal called on all European countries to completely refuse from Russian oil and gas.

"We understand the acute dependence of some states, in particular Slovakia, on this resource. But we count on the gradual diversification of supplies. At the same time, Ukraine is ready to continue fulfilling its obligations in accordance with the Association Agreement with the European Union and the Energy Charter Treaty," the Prime Minister added.

It should be reminded, that energy expert Serhii Makohon said that Ukraine has been preparing for the absence of Russian gas transit since 2020. According to him, the country can live peacefully without it.

Previously, Yuriy Korolchuk, an expert at the Institute of Energy Strategies, said that gas supply timetable may be introduced in Ukraine during winter, and power outages are inevitable.
