The development of the new version of the M1 Abrams tank, the M1A3, will take into account the operational experience of using this equipment in the war conditions in Ukraine. Older tank modifications that were transferred to Ukraine have demonstrated vulnerability to upgrade anti-tank systems, as well as problems with logistics and mobility due to their considerable weight.

It was reported by Armyrecognition.

What they want to replace

According to the analysis, Ukraine has received 31 M1A1 SA tanks, most of which were destroyed or damaged after their first deployment on the battlefield. Incidents with combat vehicles have highlighted the need to address survivability and protection against newer threats such as anti-tank missiles and drones. In this regard, the development of an upgraded version of the tank, the M1A3 Abrams, or M1E3, uses this experience.

In particular, the tank will receive new technologies, including a hybrid-electric drive to reduce fuel consumption, as well as a modular system that will allow for quick upgrades to meet new requirements. In addition, the tank will be equipped with an unmanned turret to reduce the risk to the crew, and an integrated active defence system to combat drones and flying munitions.

It is also expected to use artificial intelligence to improve the accuracy and efficiency of fire control, which will significantly improve situational awareness during combat.

Earlier, we wrote that for the first time since the beginning of a full-scale war, the Armed Forces of Ukraine may have an advantage in tanks over Russian units.

As a reminder, 2024 was a record year for the Armed Forces of Ukraine in terms of destroyed equipment and manpower of the Russian army.
