Ukraine is paying a huge price for its own freedom. Russia has unleashed a cynical war and is also interested in other European countries.

This was stated by Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets during the Tenth Human Rights Conference "Reclaiming Human Rights — Preserving Democracy" on Thursday, December 5.

The number of countries with dictatorial regimes is growing

According to Dmytro Lubinets, the number of countries with dictatorial regimes has increased over the past 30 years. And this trend continues to grow.

"Millions of people live in absolutely non-free countries — Russia, Belarus, Iran, Syria, some countries of the Far East, North Korea. Russia, investing billions of dollars in the arms race, has built itself an image of a state that seeks dominance," Lubinets said.

He added that Moscow has been undermining democratic principles for 10 years. According to the Commissioner for Human Rights, Russia is not only targeting Ukraine.

"It is impossible to find a country on the map of Europe and North America that would not be of interest to Moscow — Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary. And these are only Ukraine's closest neighbors," Lubinets said.

As a reminder, Dmytro Lubinets reported that more than 16 thousand Ukrainian civilians are in Russian captivity. Ukraine is working on their homecoming.

The Commissioner for Human Rights stated that Ukraine has not overcome the problem of forced mobilization of citizens. A new program has been launched with the organization of round-table discussions in different regions for addressing this issue.
