The EU will organize joint arms procurement for Ukraine
The European Union has approved funding for five projects of joint defense procurement among member states for the first time, in particular, ammunition. Some of them will be sent to Ukraine.
This was reported by the press service of the European Commission.
Joint defense procurement
Each of the five selected projects, implemented under the European Defense Industry Reinforcement through common Procurement Act (EDIRPA), will receive 60 million euros. It is known that the total amount of funding is 300 million euros.
The procurement will cover three areas:
• air and missile defense systems;
• modern armored vehicles;
• ammunition.
20 countries have joined the EDIRPA projects.
"This reflects the role of EDIRPA in encouraging cooperation between member states to address critical capability gaps, in particular those exacerbated by the transfer of defense products to Ukraine. Most of the selected projects also involve the procurement of defense products intended for Ukraine, including air and missile defense systems and ammunition, which strengthens the country's defense capabilities in the context of ongoing Russian aggression," the report says.
As a reminder, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell said that it is extremely important to increase the amount of financial assistance to Ukraine.
Previously, the European Union extended the EUMAM Ukraine training mission for Ukrainian defenders for two years.
