The European Union set a record for Russian liquefied natural gas imports in 2024. During this time, countries received about 30 billion cubic meters of gas, most of which transited through Ukraine.

This was reported by Bloomberg.

Thus, in 2024, Russia exported approximately 30 billion cubic meters of gas to European countries, more than half of which previously transited through Ukraine.

The publication emphasizes that this shows the difficulties of the EU in trying to be independent of Russian energy supplies. Since Ukraine stopped transit of Russian gas on January 1, its price in Europe has skyrocketed to a record level since October 2023. Currently, the price per 1,000 cubic meters has exceeded $540.

At the same time, at the beginning of 2025, gas reserves in EU storage facilities amounted to about 70%, which is significantly lower than last year's figure of 86%.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha explained that by stopping gas transit, Ukraine had "cut off" one of the last levers of Russia's influence on Europe.

Meanwhile, Naftogaz assured that the transit shutdown would not affect tariffs for household consumers in Ukraine.
