The so-called law on firewood has caused quite a stir among Ukrainians. It was adopted by the Ukrainian Parliament and sent to the President for signature. However, Volodymyr Zelenskyy is not going to sign the law.

This was reported by the BBC on Tuesday, November 5.

The President will not sign the law on firewood

As stated by the advisor to the President of Ukraine Dmytro Lytvyn, the law amending the punishment for using forests will not come into force.

"The President will not sign this law," Lytvyn emphasized.

He also noted that the President can no longer veto the law, since the deadline for this has passed.

What does the law on firewood include

On October 10, the Ukrainian Parliament adopted bill No. 9665. Among other things, it included increased administrative and criminal liability for illegal cutting down the trees.

Another point of this bill caused a flurry of criticism among Ukrainians. It concerns the introduction of fines for storing firewood without documents.

Amidst the fact that Ukrainians are warned almost every day about a difficult winter, such an innovation outraged many of them. They say that this applies not only to "black" loggers, but also to ordinary people who prepare firewood for the winter.

Fines for storing firewood

The bill adopted by the Parliament included that if the cost of the wood is more than 30 thousand hryvnias, then a person can be fined from 34 thousand to 51 thousand hryvnias. In addition, some could even receive a punishment in the form of deprivation of freedom for a term of up to three years.

If the cost of the wood was estimated at more than 90 thousand hryvnias, the fine would be from 170 thousand to 425 thousand hryvnias. In this case, a person could even be deprived of liberty for a term of 5 to 7 years.

In order not to lose a penny or receive a more serious punishment, firewood owners would need to have documents about where and how they purchased it. These include receipts, checks, invoices, etc.

The lack of evidence of the firewood legality could be the basis for a fine or a more serious punishment.

As a reminder, violators can receive fines or even end up in prison for causing significant damage to forest areas.

Recently, more and more Ukrainians have been using firewood to heat their homes. However, they should know how to choose it correctly.
