Black and Azov Seas under the threat of environmental disaster
As a result of Russian tanker accidents in the Black and Azov Seas, with more than 4 tons of oil products spilled, there is a risk of an environmental disaster.
This was reported by the press service of Greenpeace Ukraine on Sunday, December 15.
Militarization of the seas
Right now, 4,300 tons of oil products are spilling into the waters of the Kerch Strait, which connects the Black and Azov Seas, as a result of the accident of two tankers caught in a storm. Both vessels were delivering fuel to the Russian fleet, and their geolocation system was disabled for 12 days.
"Any spill of oil or oil products in these waters could have serious consequences," the environmentalists emphasized.
If oil products wash ashore, it will pollute the coastline, which will be very difficult to clean up. At the same time, the environmental impact will depend on the type of oil spilled: for example, fuel oil has a more significant impact on marine life.
"If the ships sink, there is a possibility of a long-term spill of oil and oil products," the organization added.
To recap, in early December, about six kilometers of the coast in Odesa region were covered with dead fish. The reason may be deteriorating weather conditions.
And the water in the Black Sea, especially near the coast, is becoming more fresh. The ecologist explained the dangers that could be posed.
