Damaged cable in the Baltic Sea — what is known
The NBI suspects that the damage was caused by the Russian tanker Eagle S, which belongs to the so-called "shadow fleet" of Russia.
According to the head of the NBI, Sami Paila, the mark from the anchor stretches for almost 100 kilometers. Preliminary analysis has allowed the police to form an idea of the events that led to the incident.
The "Estlink 2" cable, which connects the energy networks of Finland and Estonia, was damaged on December 25. The suspect tanker "Eagle S", according to investigators, was used to transport Russian oil in circumvention of international sanctions.
This case, according to media reports, attracted attention due to tensions in the Baltic region and possible attempts to disrupt critical infrastructure.
It should be recalled that on November 17, unknown individuals cut an Internet communication cable located in the Baltic Sea. Germany announced sabotage.
We also reported that NATO is strengthening defense in strategically important areas of the Baltic and Black Seas. This is necessary to deter potential Russian aggression.
