Scholz commented on his conversation with Putin
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz commented on his phone conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. He called it unpleasant but necessary.
Olaf Scholz said this in an interview with ZDF.
What Scholz said about his conversation with Putin
"I visited him before the war and told him my opinion, and also made it very clear that everything he later presented as reasons for the war was not true. I spoke with him on the phone until the end of 2022, and these conversations were never pleasant. This time, the conversation was also not pleasant. But we need to talk, even just to hear this," noted Scholz.
He emphasized that there are people in Germany who believe that a simple phone call will bring peace the next day. The Chancellor explained that this is not the case.
Scholz also repeated all his arguments for the invasion of Ukraine in his conversation with the Russian dictator.
"All the arguments essentially repeated themselves again. And for me, it was clear that I also had to repeat mine. So, Mr. Putin, don't expect us to reduce our support. You need to find a way out of this war. You must stop your attacks and withdraw your troops," he added.
To recap, Scholz noted that Putin has not changed his position on the war against Ukraine. At the same time, he does not consider his conversation with the Kremlin leader a mistake.
French President Emmanuel Macron also said that he had no plans to call Putin after Scholz's conversation with him.
