President Volodymyr Zelensky was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. This year's list of candidates is quite controversial, so it is possible that the prize may not be awarded at all.
The Reuters reports.
The Nobel Peace Prize
It is known that a total of 286 candidates were nominated for the prize. Among the favorites are the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), the International Court of Justice, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Pope Francis is also nominated for the award.
However, bookmakers consider Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died in prison on February 16, to be the front-runner. But since the award cannot be given posthumously, it is not possible for him to win.
Besides Navalny, another bookmakers' favorite is Zelensky, though the publication notes that his chances of winning are slim, as he is the leader of a country at war.
"Instead, since 2024 has been marked by the war between Israel and Hamas, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine entering its third year, and the bloodshed in Sudan, which has displaced over 10 million people, the committee may want to focus on humanitarian organizations helping to alleviate the suffering of civilians," writes Reuters.
Nevertheless, the committee may also choose not to award the Nobel Peace Prize to anyone. This has happened 19 times before, with the most recent instance in 1972.
Let us recall that last year Volodymyr Zelensky was also among the favorites for the Nobel Peace Prize. The reasons why his chances were slim then are the same as this year.
