European countries are discussing sending troops to Ukraine in case of a ceasefire or truce with Russia. The talks are ongoing under the chairmanship of French President Emmanuel Macron.

Reuters reported this on Wednesday, December 18.

Sending troops to Ukraine

It is known that the negotiations are currently at an early stage, and differences in views on the goals and mandate of the peacekeeping mission are already emerging. European leaders are trying to avoid a situation where Russian dictator Vladimir Putin realizes that the time has come for negotiations and that he will be able to hold on to the occupied territories.

However, European leaders are still discussing how they can provide security guarantees for Ukraine, in particular by deploying tens of thousands of their soldiers. This poses certain risks.

The newly elected US President Donald Trump has already said that American soldiers will not participate in this mission.

According to sources, major European countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Poland and the UK may form the bulk of the forces.

Analysts believe that the optimal would be to create a deterrent force of 40 thousand soldiers. However, it is likely that about 100 thousand soldiers will need to be involved for ensuring rotations and stable implementation of the mission.

It should be recalled that Macron wants to discuss the issue of deploying a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.

Previously, Trump said that Europe should take primary responsibility for supporting Ukraine and the future ceasefire.
