The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometers at approximately 10:44 a.m. local time. The second earthquake had a magnitude of 5.8.
After the earthquakes, the National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning, urging Californians to "move away from coastal waters". The weather service is still assessing the height and strength of the waves.
"A tsunami warning means that a tsunami is expected or is occurring that could cause significant flooding," the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services said.
Such warnings indicate the possibility of dangerous flooding of coastal areas and strong currents that could last several hours after the first wave arrives.
The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management advised those near the coast to move to hills or hinterland until officials say it is safe to return.
"A series of powerful waves and strong currents may affect the coast near you. You are at risk," the message said.
It should be recalled that earlier, an earthquake was recorded in the Vrancha seismic zone, near the Odesa region. The depth of the epicenter was 128.1 km.
Ukrainian seismologists also recorded an earthquake in the Chernivtsi region. The magnitude was 3.1 on the Richter scale at a depth of 3 km.
