The United States of America (USA) will recognize only two sexes — male and female. The move is part of the strategy of the new President Donald Trump, aimed at canceling a number of decrees that promoted racial equality and protection of the rights of LGBTQ+ people.

It was reported by Reuters on Tuesday, January 21.

Restrictions on the protection of the rights of LGBTQ+ people

Under Trump’s order, the US government must now use the term "sex" instead of "gender", and all identification documents, including passports and visas, must reflect a person’s "unchangeable biological classification as male or female". This decision is part of Trump’s campaign promises.

In total, Trump canceled 78 of Biden’s executive orders, including those that supported racial equality and protected the rights of LGBTQ+ people. He also revoked two important Biden executive orders — one to promote racial equality and the other to combat discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation.

Trump has also canceled other executive orders aimed at helping black, Latino, Native American, Asian American, and Pacific Islander communities.

"We are going to create a society that doesn't pay attention to skin color and that is based on merit. Starting today, it will be the official policy of the US government to recognize only two sexes — male and female," Trump claimed during his inaugural address.

In addition, Trump canceled many policies related to diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI), and restricted the rights of transgender people.

Human rights organizations and LGBTQ+ activists quickly reacted to these changes, vowing to protect minority rights and fight against the new order.

As a reminder, the first passport with the ‘X’ sex marking, which allows people who do not identify as either male or female to have an official document, was issued in the United States in October 2021.
