The family of the 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, reported that he passed away at the age of 100 after a prolonged illness. He became the oldest U.S. president in history. He had expressed a wish to live long enough to cast his vote for Democrat Kamala Harris in the last U.S. presidential election.

This was reported by The Washington Post.

What was Jimmy Carter like?

According to the publication, he was a simple southern Democratic governor with a big smile who was elected president in 1976. He served only one term before leading an extraordinary post-presidential life that included a Nobel Peace Prize.

What was particularly depressing for Carter was his heavy defeat by Republican Ronald Reagan in 1980. Although it did not come as a surprise, the election result was devastating.

After his resignation, Carter continued to work on humanitarian projects through the Carter Center. He is also known for his human rights work. In 2002, he received the Nobel Peace Prize.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise said that Jimmy Carter "set the standard for post-presidential service".

In early December, US President-elect Donald Trump suggested that Ukraine should expect a reduction in military aid from the United States.

Trump has also recently named a timeframe for the full restoration of Ukrainian cities destroyed by the war. According to him, this will take a century.
