U.S. President Donald Trump has announced his intention to resume talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He added that they used to have normal relations before.

He said this in an interview with Fox News.

Trump wants to resume dialog with Kim Jong-un

Donald Trump recalled that he had a good relationship with Kim Jong-un during his first term in office.

"He liked me and I got along with him," the US president said.

Trump also called Kim Jong Un a "smart guy" and noted that he is not a religious fanatic.

Relations between the U.S. and the DPRK have long been strained, particularly over North Korea's nuclear program. Washington has repeatedly called on Pyongyang to halt nuclear tests, which North Korea has viewed as interference in its internal affairs.

The last time Donald Trump visited the DPRK was in June 2019, which was unprecedented in the history of US-DPRK relations.

In November 2024, Donald Trump also announced that he intended to meet with Kim Jong-un and discuss foreign policy issues in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Earlier, in January 2025, the UN Security Council warned that the DPRK has been showing increased militarily capabilities due to its close cooperation with Russia.
