Peace talks could begin this winter. Poland plans to take an active part in potential negotiations, as it will lead the European Union on the principle of a rotating presidency.

This was stated by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, as Reuters wrote on Tuesday, December 10.

Tusk about the end of the war in Ukraine

The Polish Prime Minister said that peace talks could begin this winter.

Tusk emphasized that Poland will actively participate in these negotiations, as since January 1, 2024, Warsaw will lead the European Union on the principle of a rotating presidency, replacing Hungary.

"I will hold a series of negotiations, which will primarily concern the situation on our eastern border," the Prime Minister said.

Tusk said that French President Emmanuel Macron would arrive in Poland in the next few days and would report on the content of the conversation between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris.

"As you can imagine, our delegation will be co-responsible, among other things, for what the political calendar will look like, perhaps what the situation will be during the negotiations, which could, although this is still questionable, start in the winter of this year," the minister noted.

He added that he was in constant contact with Warsaw's Scandinavian and Baltic allies, and that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer would visit Warsaw in the first days of Poland's presidency of the EU.

"I really want Poland to be a country that will not only be present, but also set the tone in making decisions that will bring us security and protect Polish interests," Tusk said.

As a reminder, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of joining NATO, because without it, the "pause" in the Russian-Ukrainian war will not provide any security guarantees.

Previously, we wrote that Ukrainians consider the development of their own nuclear weapons and gradual accession to NATO to be the best security guarantees.
