A Ukrainian parliamentarian and four other people will be tried for treason in Ukraine. Among them are a former MP, a former prosecutor and two officers of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

This was reported by the General Prosecutor's Office on Friday, October 11.

People's Deputy will be tried

The prosecution has submitted an indictment to the court regarding five participants of a criminal organization, which included a member of the Ukrainian parliament, a former member of the Ukrainian parliament from the III-IX convocations, a former prosecutor, and two leaders of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

The defendants are charged with creating a criminal organization and participating in it, as well as committing treason.

The investigation revealed that in 2016, the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Federation established a criminal organization.

Subsequently, two members of the Ukrainian parliament, a former employee of the General Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine, and other individuals joined it.

"Members of the criminal organization were engaged in undermining the socio-political situation in Ukraine and discrediting the state of Ukraine on the international stage," the prosecution reported.

The prosecution added that the enemy-created agent network, led by two employees of a hostile intelligence service, operated on the territory of Ukraine until 2022. An active member of parliament, who was part of this network, conducted information sabotage activities for the aggressor state. In particular, he participated in public events and spread Russian narratives, including those regarding the top political leadership of Ukraine.

Additionally, these individuals attempted to worsen Ukraine's relations with its strategic partner, the United States. Specifically, in November 2019, the members of parliament organized a joint press conference during which they disseminated information about the international corruption of U.S. officials.

In 2020, the former prosecutor held four joint press conferences with a former member of parliament. During these events, they publicly justified false narratives in favor of the Kremlin, including a fake story about the alleged interference of Ukrainian high-ranking officials in the U.S. presidential elections.

Currently, the member of parliament is in custody. The former MP and the ex-prosecutor fled abroad just before the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, where they have been hiding from justice.

The Office of the Prosecutor General does not specify the names of those involved in the case, but it is likely that it refers to the current MP Oleksandr Dubinskyi, former MP Andrii Derkach, and former prosecutor Kostiantyn Kulyk.

Earlier, we reported that the Security Service of Ukraine detained a former official of the Kupiansk City Council in Kharkiv region and an agitator from Kherson. They both voluntarily cooperated with the Russian invaders against Ukraine.

We also wrote that the Pecherskyi District Court of Kyiv extended the measure of restraint for Nestor Shufrych, a member of the Ukrainian Parliament of the IX convocation. He is accused of treason.
