When elections can be held in Ukraine
Ukraine seems to have already begun some preparations for the presidential election. They may be held as early as 2025, no earlier than May 25.
This was reported by The Economist.
When elections are possible in Ukraine
The article says that after Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election, Ukraine has begun to talk about what policies the White House will pursue and how the Republican's victory will affect our country. One of the most important questions is whether Trump will be able to impose a ceasefire and whether Ukraine will hold elections during the war.
The publication notes that politicians in Kyiv are currently discussing two dates: January 20, 2025 (when Trump's inauguration will take place and this is the first moment for a ceasefire) and May 25, 2025, which is the date when elections could be held in Ukraine.
What does the Office of the President say
At the same time, the President's Office denies any preparations for the elections. In addition, The Economist's interlocutors are skeptical about holding elections in Ukraine during the war. According to them, this is not the first time that the capital is worried about such rumors.
"The legitimacy of the elections and the complexity of their organization also raise doubts: how can a fragmented state at war hold a general vote? Not to mention the fact that all the authorities' attention should now be focused on how to survive the winter, which analysts say will be a difficult test not only for the army but also for the country's infrastructure," the statement reads.
Will Zelenskyy run for a second term?
Nevertheless, it seems that preparations for the election have begun, as the regional election headquarters are already working on lists of candidates. It is noted that Zelenskyy is likely to run for a second term, but his possible opponents are not named.
"If elections were held tomorrow, it would be difficult for Zelensky to repeat his landslide victory in 2019. Almost three years after the Russian invasion, he is no longer seen as the undisputed war leader he once was. To leave with a clean reputation, he has only one way out - not to run for election and go down in history as the man who united the nation in war," emphasizes the publication.
As a reminder, recently MP Oksana Savchuk said that the Central Election Committee issued a resolution indicating possible preparations for the elections. The document refers to the organization and change of polling stations.
At the same time, MP Volodymyr Kreidenko said that elections in Ukraine are possible only after the end of martial law.
